Good morning sports racers. Lately I've been following the various and sundry races of the Divide:
The Tour Divide
and
The Great Divide Race
At first I was confused why there was two simultaneous races going on. The difference is that the TD starts in Banff, the GDR starts on the Montana border. For those with less time, smaller legs, or no passport you do the GDR, else you start in Banff...
Depending on how work goes, I am toying with the idea of preparing for next year's race. Based on my experience with Elk Mountain, I have verified that PhDs and endurance races don't mix (actually, thinking that going skiing 20 or so times as preparation is not enough). If I were to enter, I would be testing the conjecture that post docs and long races can work. But seriously, I'd have to start focusing now if i do it. Quit climbing, get a coach, ride a lot, ect... I don't want another sad performance like Elk Mountain...

yah Will, yahh - better get a move on! Bike on down to boston and back for training. On trails. 100 miles a day.
Given the training time, I'd love to try one of those races.

I suppose a bike tour in the Adirondacks would be a must...
North of Ottawa is definitely dirt road country, sans big mountains though...
Once I'm fit I'll have to see about all those other life responsibilities including money issues, then make a decision. I've been riding a lot lately, but going on a 3hr ride makes me tired still. I'd definitely have to bump it up a notch, or ten notches. A coach would be a must. If I did commit the next question would be wether to do it on my single speed 29er or spring for a geared bike (either another 29er or possibly a cross bike that accepts larger tires), as I really hate long flat dirt roads on single speeds. I could set up a dingle speed i suppose...
